PRO-WILD: Protect and promote crop wild relatives

PRO-WILD protects and promotes wild relatives of wheat, sugar beet, and oilseed rape, harnessing their valuable traits, such as heat tolerance and pest resistance
HCC role in PRO-WILD

HCC is responsible for the project’s stakeholder engagement strategy and for building capacity of the consortium, to engage long-term with key stakeholders. This includes mapping and prioritising stakeholders, designing and applying tailored approaches to build strong and lasting relationships, and conducting needs assessments to better understand expectations and challenges. To ensure partners are well equipped, HCC also organises capacity-building seminars, strengthening skills and fostering effective collaboration across the stakeholder network.

HCC Key contributions:

  • Stakeholder engagement strategy

The Stakeholder Engagement Strategy for the PRO-WILD project, developed by the HCC with support from WP4 and project partners, serves as a crucial guiding document for effective collaboration. Its primary purpose is to ensure all partners can efficiently engage with key stakeholders to successfully achieve the project's objectives. The strategy is built on a robust analysis collected during the project's initial months (September 2024–January 2025). This includes comprehensive stakeholder mapping—covering identification, analysis, objectives, and engagement approaches—along with a detailed action plan and a risk management framework. A key tool utilized for prioritizing relevant parties was the power grid tool. To support ongoing implementation, HCC will provide additional resources, such as dedicated webinars and customized advice, with the Strategy itself subject to regular updates as the project gathers new information.

  • Two meeting’s guides

To maximize the impact of the project results and efficiency of building strong relationships with the key stakeholders, HCC has developed two practical guides focused on organizing efficient stakeholder meetings. These resources provide clear, actionable best practices for both face-to-face and online formats. Crucially, the guides ensure that the consortium is equipped with the necessary tools and strategies to proactively involve key stakeholders, thereby helping projects achieve their core objectives through meaningful engagement and high-quality, long-term collaboration.

PRO-WILD Project summary

Crop wild relatives (CWR) are wild species related to cultivated crops, offering valuable traits like heat tolerance and pest resistance. Despite their potential, few CWR-derived varieties are widely cultivated.PRO-WILD aims to protect and conserve CWR of wheat, sugar beet, and oilseed rape, both in their natural habitats and in gene banks. The project will also catalog beneficial traits, making them accessible to breeders and researchers.

PRO-WILD brings together 19 partners from 11 countries, combining expertise in various fields, and is co-funded by the European Union, UK Research and Innovation and the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation.
